All students at James W. Smith participate in weekly art education classes. The Elementary Curriculum is intended as a well-balanced program of art education for children of all abilities, Kindergarten through fifth grade.
Students must be able to understand and apply concepts that become sequentially more complex. The Elements of Art and Principles of Design are an essential part of the visual arts curriculum as well as part of the basic curriculum of mathematics, language arts, and science.
Our Art program provides a vehicle through which our students learn to think critically and creatively, and use their ideas and feelings in original ways. Each student is expected to produce imaginative work that reflects continuing progress toward developing individual capabilities.
During the year our students have the opportunity to have their work displayed throughout our community.
Students may be selected to take part in a variety of Art Shows
* Craven County District Art Shows
* The Bank of the Arts -Annual Show
* The public library Art Show downtown New Bern
